Looking way back to Stones Throw 019 (they are at 180 now to give you a sense of context), Lootpack’s incredible full-length debut, Soundpieces: Da Anitdote!, ushered in not only the artistic force that is Madlib, but helped launch the West Coast label into the underground rap elite. Rounded out by emcee Wildchild and DJ Romes, Lootpack formed in 1990 but didn’t release this album until 1999, thanks to the growing popularity of 12” singles like "Whenimondamic", ST018. Both subtly peculiar and dope enough to keep heads nodding along, Madlib’s penchant for tight, quirky production was apparent from the very beginning, and Wildchild is the most unheralded wordsmith on the label.

Some weeks you love hip-hop, some weeks you need post-hardcore, maybe once a year you need twee-pop (maybe I said), and some weeks you need electro. I’ve been using any excuse I can find to play Pantha du Prince’s Diamond Daze and This Bliss lately. Here’s a roundabout way of using Mr. Weber again: You’ve probably already heard [about] Animal Collective’s Strawberry Jam. The leadoff single, "Peacebone," is pretty good… But it's not just b-side "Safer." Check out the remixes: Fellow Brooklynites Black Dice throw one up as they continue to warm up for their October full-length, while Weber makes more magic of his own on this reconstruction. Best EP this year?

When it came out, Whenimondamic changed my life. For the time being, that is.
