Singleversity #34

Audiversity’s weekly column, slightly modified, on random music in a predetermined number of words between 1 & 150. This week's randomly generated number: 97.

MA:

I doubt this will be a first-time listen for most readers, but the Duke Ellington and John Coltrane collaboration "In a Sentimental Mood" popped up on my flypod yesterday and I had forgotten what a timeless tune it is. Ellington’s opening piano flutter is downright haunting, and Coltrane meanwhile elegantly weaves throughout with one of the most affectionate tones he ever recorded (and props to Sam Woodyard for the excellent auxiliary drumming on the song). Sadly it is mostly condemned for cheese compilations like Coltrane for Lovers, but goddamn what a emotionally reverberant four minutes of music.

PM:

Matt Valentine and Erika Elder opened new doors for me this year. Without the Green Blues one-sheet, I wouldn’t have had a clue that New England harbors such a vibrant psych-folk scene. Mainer label L’animaux Tryst is one of the best examples: With a roster of outsider artists pushing in new directions for drone, psych, folk, and acoustic racket of all kinds, the Portland-based imprint recently started a 7” series and aren’t finished with ‘07. The hell if I know exactly what’s going on with Jazz Angel’s "Electronics Future 3000 Part 2" here, but check it anyway.
